Cat Nutrition

Kitty's Healthy Diet

Good nutrition is very important to your cat's health and well being.  Potty Talk by Toast has an excellent chapter on nutrition.  (To order, click here.) This chapter explains the benefits and drawbacks of raw, canned food, and dry food diets for cats.  For example, cats with certain urinary problems may do better with moist food than dry food diets.  Kit Casanova, my Abby boy, has a predisposition toward the formation of struvite crystals in his urine.  These crystals could conceivably cause blockage of the urine, resulting in painful and inappropriate urination.  Fortunately, because Kit is toilet trained and I can monitor his urine by catching a small sample in a jar and testing it with pH tape.  If the pH is high, this indicates possible struvite crystal formation.  I treat Kit with herbs and products that quickly bring the pH back to normal.

Excitotoxins:  Dangerous additives in human and pet food

Excitotoxins are chemical flavor enhancers found in many processed human foods—and nearly all pet foods. In many cases they are disguised as natural flavorings, spices, yeast extract, textured protein, soy protein extract, and other ingredients,  Excitotoxins can be harmful to humans and animals.  Documented  research has revealed that excitotoxins can destroy brain cells. They have aso been linked to ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, brain tumors and depression.  They are added to human and pet foods  to enhance  flavor .

Pet foods are highly competitive, and comprise a huge  industry. I stumbled onto the fact that excitotoxins were widely used in cat treats when filming Kit Casanova Jumping Through Hoops for the Troops.  Here's what happened.  After 20 jumps, Kit was tired.  He wanted to just lie on the bed and rest.  When I gave him more treats he perked up immediately and made 15 more jumps!  It didn't take me long to realize that the treats contained excitotoxins.  I now make his treats by cutting up raw chicken and drying it in the oven.  He likes it a lot better than the commercial stuff.

When it comes to the ideal diet for most cats, sorry guys--it's a raw mouse.  Potty Talk by Toast  has a chapter on nutrition.  Do I recommend raw food for your kitty?  Only if youve studied up on it.  Raw meat must be kept fresh, proper nutritional supplements added, and cleanliness is essential.  The chapter in my book, called Raw Rat for Dinner?  Surely you're Joking contains all the information you will need to provide a healthy diet for your beloved pet.  I get the supplements needed for a raw diet at the following link:  www.felineinstincts.com

Kit's Kitty Kookbook

Kit is writing his first book!  It's called "Kit's Kitty Kookbook" and it's all about healthy, delicious eating for cats.  With kit's own favorite recipes, designed to keep your cat healthy and happy, the book should be a huge hit with cats and owners alike.

"I am very finicky about what I eat" says Kit Casanova.
There's an excellent product that helps very much to stablilize my cat's urinary pH and prevent the struvite crystals.
It's available at www.Wysong.net.

"This product keeps me using the toilet instead of the floor!" comments Kit Casanova.
